A SHAK Showcase for Early Music America

The Early Music America Summit is coming to Seattle, and SHAK has been selected to represent the future of historical performance! Join us for a remarkable double-bill performance featuring our students ages 8-18 from different SHAK programs, all in a varied and lively 75 minutes.
First, in our Early Music Youth Academy baroque orchestra, teen musicians play baroque-bowed upper strings, viola da gamba, and harpsichord, presenting the elegant and expressive music of Arcango Corelli, Johann Bernhard Bach, and more. Johann Heinrich Schmelzer’s “Fencing School” comes to life with young fencing students in 18th century costume!
The second half of the program showcases our medieval-music kids and teens, sharing some of our favorite lesser-known gems from Finland’s Piae Cantiones — a rare historical song repertoire originally made specifically for young people. We finish with a short and fast-paced SHAK original dramatic production, The Partly-True Tale of Roland the Farter, which imagines a hilariously harrowing dilemma for the fictional young heir of a real-life twelfth-century professional flatulist.
The Early Music Youth Academy is co-directed and accompanied by Eleanor Legault (violin) and Nick Chrisman (cello, SHAK '21). Fencing instruction is by Maître d'Armes Cecil Longino. Medieval music is directed and accompanied by SHAK founder Shulamit Kleinerman (vielle, harp, percussion) and Nick Chrisman (vielle, percussion, voice), and drama is directed by Carmen Mettler.
Presented by Early Music America, the concert is free of charge. University Presbyterian is ADA accessible and has a free parking lot on the other side of 47th Street.
