Merry Songs & Dances Winter Workshop: Music of the 13th-18th Centuries

Dec 30-Jan 4

In 2010, Seattle Historical Arts for Kids released Merry It Is!, an acclaimed studio album of our students’ favorite songs and instrumental dances from centuries past. Now it’s time to celebrate the tenth anniversary of this special collection, and you’re invited to participate!

Spend a fun week in SHAK’s signature “one room schoolhouse” collaborative learning atmosphere, led by founder Shulamit Kleinerman. We’ll sing, dance, explore SHAK’s one-of-a-kind costume collection, meet the band of period instrumentalists, and discover how people lived in the European Medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque eras and American Colonial Days. Participants will explore the best-loved repertoire from the album and from our ten years of programming since then.

On Saturday, put on your costume and help us share this delightful music with the world in our all-ages anniversary concert! Tuition includes admission for the participant's whole family.

Who can participate

  • Kids and teens 7-14 (age 6 by request)

  • From newcomers to experienced singers and dancers

  • Everyone works at their own level

  • Apprentice instrumentalists, age 11 and up and late beginner to advanced level, may participate by invitation -- please inquire for more details. Instrumental participants will receive some sheet music to practice in advance.

*About SHAK's boy scholarships:

These days, boys and men are often underrepresented in the arts of drama, dance, and singing, and may be reluctant to sign up. We want to encourage you to give these historical arts a try! SHAK programs tend to draw together a varied mix of creative, strong-minded, curious young people who often find a unique sense of community together across categories of age and gender. Boys attending a SHAK theater, dance, or singing program are invited to take a first-time 15% discount off your tuition level. Kids who identify themselves outside of binary gender are also welcome to use this scholarship.

Need-based financial aid is always available for anyone, so please don’t hesitate to ask.

At SHAK we know that everyone benefits when our programs are accessible, diverse, and welcoming!
