SHAK teens with Cinnamon Bird on Revels Salon series

First United Methodist Church, 621 Tacoma Ave South, Tacoma , WA

Advance purchase is recommended for this engaging and unique double bill. Opening for Cinnamon Bird's program of duo fiddle music through the ages on vielles and violins, the talented and gracious young teens of SHAK present the first half of the program. They share music from the 12th-16th centuries -- from medieval greatest hits to lesser-known gems, from reflective to rockin' out, from straight-up call and response songs to magical harmonies on voices and instruments. With feeling and skill, they sing and play vielles, harp, and percussion, embracing ancient but totally catchy material as their own. Young people bring old music to life!

Cinnamon Bird represents a five-year collaboration between early music specialist Shulamit Kleinerman and prolific fiddler Ruthie Dornfeld. The duo rediscovers the vielle as an alluringly apt voice not only for the most ancient “classical” music but for traditional tunes from Europe and old-time America -- and even some of Ruthie’s new compositions for vielle, exploring the full range of the instrument’s dark, textured sound.
