SHAK presents an original period-music, historically-costumed youth pageant of songs from Finland’s Piae Cantiones. The collection of fun and tuneful Latin songs represents the longstanding repertoire of the choirboys at the cathedral school in Turku. Thanks to its publication in 1582, some of the songs are alive today as familiar Christmas carols and beloved choral favorites. Join us as we explore the origins of the collection and the publishers' decision to make it available to everyone! Appropriate for audiences of all ages, this dramatization of the origins of the Piae Cantiones will be sung and acted by students aged 7-18 in period costume, accompanied by Jacob Breedlove, Bill McJohn, Shulamit Kleinerman, and the skilled student instrumentalists of SHAK's Early Music Youth Academy. Made possible in part by support from the Finlandia Foundation National, this performance lasts about one hour and is appropriate for all ages.
