Early Music Youth Academy presents The Evolution of Style: Renaissance to Baroque

Faith Lutheran Church , 8208 18th Ave NE, Seattle WA 98115

In the early seventeenth century, Italian composers were developing something new, not by replacing the old Renaissance practices but by adding fresh possibilities. Join the Early Music Youth Academy's skilled young players — high school students playing Baroque violin and cello, viola da gamba, and harpsichord — as they explore music from a period of history that saw the end of the Renaissance and the birth of the Baroque, including works by Claudia Rusca, Giovanni Gabrieli, Carlo Farina, Andrea Falconieri, Giovanni Girolamo Kapsberger, Salamone Rossi, and Biagio Marini. You'll hear the personable conversations of the polyphonic fantasia evolve into the theatricality of the sinfonia, while the hearty, hefty old Renaissance galliard form grows more light and sinuous with filigreed melodies and elastic harmonies. This 40-minute program is directed by SHAK founder Shulamit Kleinerman, early violin, and features special guest artist Henry Lebedinsky, harpsichord.

There is no charge for admission; free-will donations at the door offset the cost of SHAK's donor-supported programming. The church is accessible, with on-street parking and a small parking lot at the north end of the building.
